Why choose organic, eco-friendly cosmetics?
In recent years, we have been hearing more and more about solid natural cosmetics that are produced in a way that is environmentally sustainable. But why is this becoming increasingly common? Is this just a trend?
Let’s be clear: When can a cosmetic be defined “ECO-FRIENDLY and BIO-COMPATIBLE”?
These words can be used for cosmetics that do not contain ingredients that are harmful to the environment and if special attention is given to sustainability down the entire production chain. In order to obtain certification, these products cannot contain:
- Synthetic fragrances or coloring (even according to more restrictive criteria like the ones used in European standards and CCPB certification)
- Silicons and waxes
- GMOs
- Palm oil
- Substances exposed to radiation
- Animal-based ingredients
Organic, eco-friendly cosmetics don’t harm the natural and animal world because they don’t contain chemical substances that end up in sewers after they’ve been used, and as a result, in the soil and groundwater.
Then, what about the micro-plastics in commercial chemical cosmetics? These are tiny plastic particles that seriously harm the marine ecosystem and can be ingested by fish and mollusks. So, we inevitably also ingest these substances.
Eco-friendly, organic cosmetics are different because they focus on sustainable, conscious production that doesn’t leave a human footprint on the environment.
This is why more and more people are deciding to produce and use natural products that don’t harm eco-systems, thereby helping to combat climate change through small, everyday gestures.
The features of organic, eco-friendly cosmetics
NATURAL INGREDIENTS: In order for a cosmetic to be certified as organic and eco-friendly, at least 95% of its ingredients must come from natural, plant-based raw materials. This implies:
- significantly reducing environmental pollution
- lots of important health benefits
HEALTH BENEFITS: Natural products aren’t just non-polluting, they have a truly positive impact on our skin and scalp because they are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that provide healthy, balanced nourishment and vitality. Some of the substances in commercial cosmetics, like Vaseline and wax, don’t help our skin at all. Actually, they prevent our skin from breathing and foster the accumulation of impurities and growth of black heads.
Did you know our skin absorbs 60% of the products we put on it? In one year, our skin can absorb up to 2 kilos of cosmetics. So, choose your cosmetics wisely!
CERTIFICATION: Be wary of non-certified cosmetics that say they follow a “green” philosophy but have no certification. Certification is essential because it’s given by a regulator that certifies that the product has been made according to the rules of the mark. They provide protection for consumers and for the planet.
What are the benefits of SOLID cosmetics?
This is one curious fact you absolutely have to know! How much plastic do you save when you use a traditional bar of soap instead of the usual liquid soap?
By choosing a solid bar of soap, you save 2 of the 250ml plastic bottles that contain traditional liquid soaps.
So, what is the first benefit of using solid cosmetics?
You guessed it: PACKAGING! The line of organic, eco-friendly SOLID cosmetics uses ecological packaging like paper, which is biodegradable and compostable. Once you’ve finished using your product, nothing will remain of it, not even its packaging!
LESS WATER. Very little water is used to produce natural cosmetics. Their solid form is a concentration of active ingredients and essential oils, they work more effectively and intensely, and the waste of raw materials is reduced to a minimum.
LESS POLLUTION FROM TRANSPORT. Solid cosmetics take up less space and volume and, as a result, fewer vehicles are needed to transport them.
ORIGINAL AND COLORFUL. Colorful solid cosmetics make your beauty routine even more fun! Their colors and fragrances are so inviting, you might even feel like eating them!
STORAGE. Unlike sprays, for example, organic, eco-friendly solid cosmetics are not released into the air and last longer because they are concentrated. They are also easier to store and reduce waste because it is easier to gauge the quantity you use.
The fact that more and more people are becoming interested in natural, organic cosmetics, along with their awareness that each small, daily action of ours can affect the environment is what is leading people to choose products that are natural and that respect nature. So, not only for health and beauty, but to save the planet we live on as well.
If before what captured your attention was the brand or advertising, now products are being noticed for what is written on the back of their package, their label. In order to know what is really in them and how they are made.
